Recommended Reading #165: Humanity and Inspiration, Pt. IX

“Homer, Heroic Blind ‘Wonder Cat’ Who Inspired Millions, Dies in New York at 16” by Gwen Cooper (Non-Sex-Related, Animals, Memoir) 8/28/13

This, admittedly, centers around a cat, making it not exactly about “humanity.” But the “inspiration” part certainly feels there for me, and I feel deep reverence and appreciation for Homer’s life, his human guardian’s love and care for him, and her sharing of it with us. (I have not read the book but have seen it numerous times during walk-throughs of different Barnes & Nobles.) Love and beautiful journey to you, Homer.

“Has America progressed?” by Kiese Laymon (Sexual Orientation, Sex and Culture, Religion, Athletics, Memoir) 6/7/13

Whatever any answers to the questions posed here may be, I appreciate the depth and earnestness I interpret in the asking of them. I agree that truly examining ourselves and our habits and tendencies is an instrumental step in anything that may be considered progress.

“The ‘female Schindler’ who saved 2,500 Jewish children but died wishing she’d rescued more” by Richard Pendlebury (Non-Sex-Related, History, Politics) 5/22/08

Though I found it of course hard to read in some places, this strikes me as extraordinary beyond description. It certainly seems something everyone would do well to know.
